Additional FAQs: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) for Health and Safety Professionals
1. What is the MouseKeyDo System? The MouseKeyDo System is a series of lessons that teach computer users new ways to use the keyboard and mouse, both on a desktop computer and on a laptop, in order to work more productively with less pain. By using the self-guided CD-ROM and accompanying training manual, clinicians and safety professionals can train patients and symptomatic employees very quickly - 50 to 75 percent faster than without the manual and CD. The System is designed to complement clinical treatment and has been effective for preventing as well as managing a wide variety of chronic and acute repetitive strain injuries (RSI). 2. On what conditions has the MouseKeyDo System been proven effective? This program is especially helpful in restoring productive function to people suffering from nerve entrapment and/or tendinitis due to inflammation. Some of the specific diagnoses that have been successfully eased by MouseKeyDo training include the following: a. Lateral and medial epicondylitis b. DeQuervain's tenosynovitis c. Ganglionic cysts d. Carpal tunnel syndrome e. Cubital tunnel syndrome f. Radial nerve entrapment g. Thoracic outlet syndrome h. Myofascial neck and shoulder pain syndrome 3. How is the MouseKeyDo System different from other programs on the market? The MouseKeyDo System was developed by Norman J. Kahan, M.D., a physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist practicing in Cupertino, California - the heart of computer-centric Silicon Valley. Dr. Kahan based the System on the way the body naturally moves, drawing from clinical practice, scientific research, and a close study of computer and piano technique. It is the only system that includes a self-paced interactive training manual and CD-ROM teaching a complete set of techniques designed to alleviate discomfort and maximize productivity. 4. What does the MouseKeyDo System include? The MouseKeyDo System is made up of two parts: a 98-page training manual and an interactive CD-ROM. Computing Without Pain with the MouseKeyDo System covers 27 step-by-step lessons, with photo illustrations and practice exercises for each lesson. It also contains a discussion of the 12 most common computer-related injuries, a self-assessment quiz, and a training log to help users track their progress. The companion CD-ROM features Dr. Kahan explaining and demonstrating all the techniques and practice exercises in 45 minutes of VHS-quality video. (System Requirements for playing the CD-ROM are compatible with Windows 98, 2000, ME, XP Home, XP Professional, Mac OSX, MacOS Classic, MacOS 9.x.) 5. How does the MouseKeyDo System help workers with computer-related injuries return to productivity? Studies show that 33 percent of computer-related wrist, arm, and neck pain is caused by improper work habits and computer techniques, even in an office designed to be ergonomically correct. If work habits are the cause of someone's pain, simply treating the symptoms won't solve the problem. The answer is to make permanent changes in the way people use their computers. The MouseKeyDo System was developed to do exactly that. People who use the MouseKeyDo System to manage chronic or acute RSI feel better fast, return to work quickly, and avoid re-injuring themselves in the future. 6. Why should I offer the MouseKeyDo System to my patients or clients? The MouseKeyDo System is a proven effective program that helps your patients or clients prevent and manage injury while offering you opportunities for increased income. Approved MouseKeyDo System providers can do the following:

After one or two months, most people find they're working at their previous level - or, because they're no longer experiencing pain, that they're more productive than before. What do other therapists and clinicians say about the MouseKeyDo System? "I have found great results with my patients while utilizing the MouseKeyDo System training manual and CD-ROM as the foundation for our keyboarding class. The principles are easy, with just making the change that is always difficult for people. I feel that with the exponentially increasing usage of computers in our daily lives, a shift needs to happen in the way we utilize them. Dr. Kahan has done an exceptional job of developing a system which is easy to teach, learn and use as a refresher periodically." Lee H. Kole, PT BreakThrough Physical Therapy, Sunnyvale, California Back Education and Sports Therapy, Cupertino, California "I have found MouseKeyDo System training to be an effective functional training program that clearly goes beyond providing patients with modalities, manual therapy, and exercise training. The training techniques help patients who are serious about controlling pain brought on by computer keyboarding" David Severson, PT Joan Urban, PTA Milpitas Physical Therapy, Milpitas, California "The MouseKeyDo System has a strong, biomechanically sound scientific basis for its purpose and effectiveness. It reduces the stresses of keyboarding on commonly injured areas by distributing the forces throughout several joints and muscles, which decreases the overall demand on one specific area. This system is an excellent and valuable tool in my practice and allows me to treat patients with these injuries." Fabrice Rockich, D. P. T, O. C. S., C. S. C. S. OPTM Physical Therapy of Saratoga, Saratoga, California "The MouseKeyDo System provides an excellent training program for any computer user. This program covers the essentials of full body posture, arm and hand position, muscle tension, and an extensive strategy for advanced keyboarding techniques designed to reduce risks of repetitive strain injury or RSI. My patients find the computer CD easy to follow and fun to use. Coaching patients through the process of learning the MouseKeyDo System program has also helped me with my own computer use. I recommend the program highly to computer users, patients, therapists, and to any one helping computer users to work more safely." Tom Petzoldt, OTR-L, CHT Petzoldt Memorial Hand and Physical Therapy San Jose, California "Along with appropriate exercise, frequent breaks, and workload pacing, proper technique is an integral part of any rehabilitation program for repetitive strain injury. Dr. Kahan's MouseKeyDo System will help computer users learn how to use the whole body at the keyboard to help prevent injuries. I highly recommend it!" Deborah Quilter Author, The Repetitive Strain Injury Recovery Book www.RSIhelp.com New York, New York "Dr. Kahan has done a fabulous job developing the MouseKeyDo System. "It is nicely organized, and has well thought - out and researched alternatives to keyboard and mouse use. My patients are enjoying increased comfort at the computer after completing this training. I highly recommend that anyone who spends time on the computer try it, to decrease their computer-related symptoms or avoid them altogether!" Ingird Wade, O. T. R./L, CHT Myofascial Physical and Occupational Therapy Associates Los Gatos, California "Dr. Kahan has gone to great lengths to develop a practical yet well founded, evidence-based program. He combines his musical abilities with his medical back ground in a humanistic approach to help injured workers return to productive livelihoods. As the director of large facilities ergonomics program, I use the MouseKeyDo System to help workers prevent full-blown injuries. I recommend it." Mariam P. Wedemeyer, M.S., O. T.
